Handrail and guardrail is the most common thing contractors call us for. Stairs, ramps, mezzanine edges, loading docks, walls. It's also the thing inspectors measure most carefully, so we build it to the number.

Industrial areas not open to the public may fall under OSHA instead: 42" top rail (give or take 3"), a midrail, and toeboards where tools or parts could fall.
Questions we get
What's the difference between a handrail and a guardrail?
A handrail is what you hold onto. A guard (guardrail) keeps you from falling off an edge. On commercial stairs you usually need both: a 42-inch guard on the open side with a handrail mounted at 34 to 38 inches.
Is ADA handrail different?
The height is the same 34 to 38 inches, but ADA adds details: continuous rails, extensions at the top and bottom, returns so a bag strap can't catch, and 1-1/2 inches of clearance to the wall. Ramps need rails on both sides.
Can you replace rail on an existing building?
Yes. A lot of older buildings have rail that was fine when it went in and fails today's code, usually on height or opening size. We can replace it or add to it.
