We build interior and exterior stair rails out of steel, from simple square pickets to horizontal bar, cable and cut panel designs. Each one is measured on your stairs, drawn, built in the Tontitown shop, and installed by the crew that built it.
Styles we build
- Square picket. The classic. 1/2" or 5/8" square bar, straight or with a simple twist or collar. Works in any house.
- Horizontal bar. Flat bar or round rod running parallel to the floor. Very popular in new builds. Some cities limit it on stairs because it's climbable, so we check before we draw it.
- Cable. Stainless cable through steel posts. Mostly for open stairs and lofts where you don't want to block light.
- Panel. Perforated metal, woven mesh or a laser-cut pattern welded into a frame.
- Metal balusters in a wood rail. Keep your wood handrail and newels, swap the spindles for steel.
The code part
Arkansas's residential code follows the International Residential Code. Here's what your inspector is going to measure on a stair rail:

Your city may add to this. We'll confirm with the building department on anything that's being permitted.
Timeline
Three to five weeks from signed drawing to install is normal. Powder coat is usually the long pole. If you're on a builder's schedule, call us early and we'll plan around the flooring date.
What we need to quote it
- A photo of the whole stair from the bottom and one from the top
- Number of steps, and whether there's a landing
- Photos of what's there now, if it's a replacement
- A picture of a style you like
Questions we get
Can you replace my wood balusters with metal and keep the wood handrail?
Yes. It's one of the most common jobs we do. We pull the old spindles, fit steel balusters into the existing treads and handrail, and paint or powder coat them. It's cheaper than a full new rail and changes the whole look of the stairs.
How long does install take?
A normal interior staircase with one or two runs is one day on site. Long runs, landings and exterior stairs can take two.
Will it wobble?
Not if it's done right. Most wobbly rails are posts bolted into a subfloor with nothing behind it. We check what we're mounting into when we measure, and if it needs blocking or a different post base, we tell you before we build.
Do you do spiral stairs?
Rails for spiral stairs, yes. Complete spiral staircases, call us and we'll talk through it. Some we build, some make more sense as a kit we install.
What finish do most people pick?
Matte black or textured black powder coat, by a wide margin. Raw steel with a clear coat is popular for modern interiors.
